An iris freckle is a flat, superficial pigmented lesion of the iris that does not alter the iris architecture. Importantly, these lesions have virtually no malignant potential; other pigmented lesions of the iris arising from the iris stroma do, however. Typically, iris freckles are not seen unless someone notices it and mentions it to the patient, or a close-up photograph reveals the lesion. There are no symptoms associated with an iris freckle.
